The latest rallying cry: Republicans attack Obama on birth control
They're pointing to the administration's recent decision to require employers that are affiliated with churches to cover birth control for their workers
House Speaker John Boehner vowed that Congress would repeal an Obama administration regulation requiring employers to provide birth-control coverage in their employees’ health plans
In 2005, Romney required Massachusetts hospitals to provide emergency contraception to rape victims
The Republican Party is digging deep into the old bucket of white racism, using the politics of fear, hostility and anxiety to win over white voters
One cannot forget that the contemporary Republican Party was born with the Southern Strategy
This is a formula for a politics of white grievance mongering and white victimology
This politics is a dreamworld where white conservatives are oppressed
The Southern Strategy script claims white rights are infringed upon by a tyrannical federal government
And, then there is the dog whistle of the elite liberal media that are beholden to the interests of the “undeserving poor,” racial minorities, gays, and immigrants
When you are in peril, you go with what you know
While the 2012 Republican candidates are stirring the pot of white racial anxiety, this is a means to a larger end—the destruction of the country’s social safety net
Republicans use racial anxiety to support their goals of vicious economic austerity policies at the expense of the working and middle classes
Several Republican presidential candidates have become mired in the racial politics that is synonymous with the GOP
Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum have all engaged in race-baiting
During the Iowa Caucus, Mr. Santorum said “I don’t want to make Black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money
NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said Mr. Santorum, like many Republicans, has been pushing to end so-called “entitlement” programs like Social Security and Welfare. For decades, Republicans have attacked the Welfare program fostering the false notion African-Americans are its main recipients when in fact Whites are
Newt Gingrich calls President Obama a “food stamp president”
The Republican strategy has been to block and delay President Obama’s agenda at every turn
President Obama has absorbed most of the backlash from a public that tends to hold the president singularly responsible for all political outcomes
President Obama’s campaign of publicly highlighting Republican opposition has simultaneously helped to absolve him of at least part of the blame and made him look more like a strong leader
Republicans’ insistence on stoking racial prejudices to garner votes is not only repulsive, but will most-like fail
As America become less and less white, many in the GOP need to realize they are not simply speaking to those who look like them
In order to be successful, Republicans need to connect with minority voters, not offend them
